Passive Astronaut Injury Protection System

We are working with NASA and MIT on the design and development of an Astronaut Protection System to prevent astronaut injuries from the Space Suit during training at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at the Johnson Space Center, and Extra Vehicular Activities (EVA) operations in low Earth orbit. The system is composed of a series of passive and active devices attached to the Liquid Cooling Garment (LCG) worn by astronauts inside the Space Suit to keep them cool. Trotti Studio, is the leading designer and fabrication manager of the systems. We have collaborated with Michal Kracik in the design and the Dainese Company on the fabrication. The passive systems are customized composite pads are made of rigid and advanced foams. The active systems are inflatable devises able to separate the astronaut from the Space Suit, preventing any direct contact or pressure from the rigid elements of the suit directly to the astronaut’s body.

The Biosuit and Astronaut Protection System were exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2015.
